Hi Hisham

I heard about the benefits of practicing Pilates from friends but did not really believe it till I signed up for your Pilates class about 5 months ago at Toa Payoh West CC. Being a relatively tall woman at 1.67cm, I have the habit of “hunching” my back/shoulders when I walk and hence developed a problem somewhat like “kyphosis”, over the years. At your Pilates classes, we were always reminded to “pull back our shoulders” when we executed the moves. These regular regimes have subconsciously helped to improve my bad posture and I feel and look less “hunched” nowadays. This benefit really came as a pleasant surprise to me. In addition, your emphasis on the exercise and control of my 4th quadrant muscles have also helped to strengthen my otherwise weak core muscles. I used to drag going for the exercise due to laziness but always feel “energized” after each Pilates lesson. In fact, I have grown to look forward to the lessons. Your fun and informal instruction style helps to “liven” the class and now that we are into the 3rd session of your class, I have always enjoyed your classes.

Just want to let you know that my friend - Ms Cheah Ee Lin and I enjoyed your pliates class very much. Before joining the class, I am not flexible at all (can't even touch my toes when I bent down!!) after attending about few sessions, I can feel that I am more flexible and by the end of the last session I can finally touch my toes! The breathing technique that I have learnt has also enchance my regular exercise regime.

Testimonial 4I have a chronic lower back problem which has become more severe lately due to degenerating discs. It is from an injury some 20 years ago, when I practice Aikido. I did Yoga a couple of years ago, but I have found Pilates to be much more effective in alleviating my discomfort. (Not that I mean to degrade Yoga in anyway. The Yoga instructor probably had a different emphasis then.) What impressed me was the emphasis on strengthening of the other core muscles supporting the back and especially the tucking in of the inner core abdominal muscles. Now I know: When I straighten up after bending over, tightening those core muscles greatly relieves the strain on my lower back. I also do tai-chi seriously. Proper breathing with the tucking in of the same inner muscles seems to give a better and more stable posture to my tai-chi stances. I appreciate that Hisham’s lessons are always very well paced, neither overly strenuously (which you probably don’t want after a hard day’s work at the office), nor too easy (no training effect). I finish each session feeling energised . . . my back and especially my posture feels perfect. Hisham is a caring trainer who also understands various injuries and their related Pilates postures – whether they are good or bad for you. You wouldn’t want to practice a posture that aggravates your injury. Here’s some info to share with anyone with back problems (these are from my personal experience and from having consulted some specialists):- One of the major problems contributing to the discomfort are tight muscles. It’s also a ‘chicken and egg’ thing – your back hurts due to the tight muscles and vice versa - your muscles are tight due to your back problem – they are working extra hard to keep you upright; coupled with unequal tension and strength, they tend to pull in an unbalanced manner, hence, the pain.You’ll be surprised at the muscles involved:
muscles along your entire back ( I heard of people with slipped-disc with backs that are as hard as laundry boards, due to excessive tension) buttock muscles, front thigh muscles, and rear thigh muscles (your hamstrings).Stretching these muscles is of paramount importance. It greatly relieves the pain and strain I feel in my lower back. So, forget about stretching postures you learnt during PE in school or during your NS. You’ve got to stretch those muscles in an isolated manner whilst maintaining proper posture. That’s where Pilates come in. Pilates mat-work to me is about:-Proper breathing
Strengtening deep abdominal muscles
Exercising other core muscles which are normally little used.
Keeping the right posture (alignment of the spine) during all stances
Stretching tight muscles So, I am lucky to have discovered Pilates through Hisham. Thanks!Regards Ken

I was in a senior citizen class and many of the students in the class had knee pain , back pain, hip pain and shoulder pain. Some of them have never attended Pilates class before!

Hisham was undaunted by all these.. in fact with his experience he is able to modify the workout to suit those who cannot follow his original blueprint workouts.

He was very encouraging and lightened the mood of the whole class with his witty jokes.
